Voiles II (Sails II)

Aubusson tapestry woven by the Hamot workshop.
With signed label, n°1.
Circa 1970.

It was in 1953 that Jean Picart le Doux proposed to Chaye to become his assistant and encouraged him to design tapestry cartoons : he would produce numerous bucolic cartoons, but also views of Normandy (Mont Saint Michel, Honfleur, regattas,…) from whence he came.

Chaye settled in Honfleur in 1964 and this inspired him to produce numerous cartoons relating to the maritime activity in the Seine estuary, in a similar vein to André Hambourg in his paintings.
