André DERAIN

André DERAIN

Scène de chasse (Hunting Scene)

Aubusson tapestry woven by the Braquenié workshop.
N°V/VIII.
Circa 1940.

Derain started taking an interest in tapestry as early as the 1930’s along at the instigation of Marie Cuttoli who had approached him on this subject : « la chasse au cerf » (the deer hunt) would be directly inspired by the painting now in the hands of the Musée d’Art Moderne in Troyes (Donation Pierre and Denise Lévy). In 1940, with Lurçat, he designed a cartoon on the hunting theme which was probably used for this tapestry.
