Composition aux oiseaux (composition with birds)
Aubusson tapestry woven by the Picaud workshop.
A relatively little-known artist, inspired by cubism, Edelmann was also attracted to the art of tapestry, notably in association with Pierre Baudouin and Jacques Lagrange through the short-lived review “Cahiers de la Tapisserie”, and the equally ephemeral exhibition of small-scale tapestries which travelled the world in 1960-1961, an experiment which allowed some major artists (Arp, Braque, Calder, …) to bear witness to their interest for this particular medium.
Curator of the SEITA gallery, he was the moving force behind the exhibition entitled “Pierre Baudouin, 80 tapisseries de peintre” in 1985, which established the founding role of the latter in the Tapestry movement.
This particular tapestry is a proof that Edelmann did not only commit himself to small formats. The rural motif, in keeping with the subject matter of the artist’s paintings, remains, in the absence of a label, difficult to interpret with any exactitude.
